Eighty percent of Canadians now believe that owning a home in Canada is only for the rich. Among those who do not own a home, over 70 percent have given up on ever owning one. In major cities across Canada, tenants are regularly paying over 50 percent of their income on shelter, which is a crushing and unsustainable burden.
This was entirely predictable. Over the past 30 years, Canada has stopped investing in affordable non-market housing under successive Liberal and Conservative governments. As a result, only 3.5 percent of Canada's housing stock is currently non-market housing, half the OECD average.
Every Canadian deserves a safe and affordable place to call home.
Don is committed to addressing the housing crisis head-on by implementing bold and effective measures to ensure that everyone has access to affordable housing. His plan includes:
- Constructing 500,000 non-market homes to address the urgent need for affordable housing.
- Building significantly more co-op homes.
- Setting binding timelines to bring Canada’s non-market housing supply up to the OECD average.
- Implementing a Renter’s Bill of Rights to ensure strong protections across Canada.
- Ending the predatory practices of corporate landlords.
- Increasing the Foreign Buyer’s Tax.
